Why do you do what you do?

Matthew 6:2-4

2 So when you give to the poor, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may be honored by men. Truly I say to you, they have their reward in full.

3 But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing,

4 so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you.

Jesus now addresses two forms of practicing righteousness,  The one we will focus on today is generosity, or giving to the poor.  Jesus does not say "if" you give, but "when" you give.  This does not mean we give without discernment.  There are times we shouldn't give.  Jesus is addressing how we should give.  We do not give to others to look good.  We give because we have a love for God and love for others.  This speaks to our motives.  Our motives should be for the glory of God and the good of people.  Why do you do what you do?
