Do you fast?

Matthew 6:16-18

16 Whenever you fast, don't be gloomy like the hypocrites.  For they make their faces unattractive, so that their fasting is obvious to people.  Truly I tell you, they have their reward.

17 But when you fast, put oil on your head and wash your face,

18 so that your fasting isn't obvious to others but to your Father who is in secret.  And your Father who sees in secret will reward you.

Fasting may be a strange concept to some people.  It was a common practice in Jesus's day.  It was a ritual that was no longer done for the right reasons, but for self-glory.  Should you fast? There are times that it would be beneficial for you to fast.  Fasting is a spiritual discipline that teaches us humility and dependency on God.  It is never to promote how good we are, but it does reveal how needy we are.  I believe fasting from food is one option among many.  I believe fasting from social media or television is a viable option.  Do you fast? Pray about it and see what the Lord wants you to do.
