Teaching With Authority

Matthew 7:28-29 When Jesus had finished these words, the crowds were amazed at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

How do you respond to words from those in authority?  Do you obey your doctor's orders for healthy living? Do you slow down when the police officer tells you to slow down? Do you follow your boss' instructions? The answer should be yes to all those questions. Jesus' sermon started with just His followers but soon the crowds were drawn into His message.  They had just heard the greatest sermon by the greatest preacher ever.  Their response was amazement.  Instead of amazement, they should have trusted in the words.  We can be amazed at the doctor's orders, but not trust in them.  Jesus' words are not just good suggestions. They are a call to repent of our sins and to trust in Jesus.  Take some time this week to read the Sermon on the Mount again.
