Following Jesus

Matthew 8_18-22 Now when Jesus saw a crowd around Him, He gave orders to depart to the other side of the sea.  Then a scribe came and said to Him, "Teacher, I will follow You wherever You go."  Jesus said to him, "the foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head."  Another of the disciples said to Him, "Lord, permit me first to go and bury my father."  But Jesus said to him, "Follow Me, and allow the dead to bury their own dead."

The work of Jesus was drawing people to Him.  He appeared to be the Savior everyone wanted.  He healed people physically and restored people spiritually, but most people had not considered the demands Jesus makes for His disciples.  Matthew 8:18-22 provides two demands made by Jesus if you want to follow after Him.  You must give up everything to follow Him.  In verse 20, Jesus tells the man to count the cost.  Salvation is free but it costs you everything.  There are many people who have made a decision to follow Christ, but the decision has not made them.  They honor Jesus with their lips, but their heart is not devoted to Him.  The second demand that Christ makes is that you must make Jesus your only God.  You cannot serve God and money, Jesus will not tolerate a co-savior.  He alone is our Savior.  Spen some time today reflecting on your life and how Jesus has saved you.
