God Is Spirit

John 4:24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

Jesus taught this truth to the woman at the well.  She was a Samaritan and hated by the Jews.  Jesus met this woman on the outskirts of her town, She was an outcast among her own people.  Jesus' trip to Samaria was not haphazard but was on the Father's itinerary.  It was a purposeful excursion into an unholy land.  He shared with her that her greatest need was not physical water, but the spiritual water that flows from the throne of grace.  He told her that her broken relationships had not met her needs and that He alone would be able to meet her deepest needs.  She deflected with thoughts on worship and Jesus countered, "God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."  God is not visible to the human eye.  He does not possess a body.  He is not confined as we are to the limitations of the physical realm.  This is why it is wrong to make images of God.  The result of God being Spirit is that we must worship Him in spirit and truth.  The spirit here refers to our hearts.  The inner person, not the outward rituals used in some religions.  We must worship Him in truth.
