A Raw Nerve

Matthew 12:1-7

A trip to the dentist has improved over the last 100 years.  They are almost pain free until the dentist hits a nerve that is not numbed enough.  At that time, there is weeping and the gnashing of teeth.  Matthew 12: 1-14 exposes a raw nerve in the hearts of Israel's religious leaders.  This narrative reveals that Israel came to trust in the traditions of men not the Word of God.  What are you trusting in?  We must align our hearts with the Bible.  We must not allow the worship of God to spring from our desires, but to be regulated by the Bible.  The Sabbath was one area where the Jewish leaders went  beyond the scope of Scripture.  God commanded the Jews to observe the Sabbath as a day of rest.  The Sabbath observed by the Jews had become a burden.  The Jew had come to serve the Sabbath.  This was not God's intent.  Their traditions had become an idol to them.  They had become a people focused on the external matters of religion; not the heart, "But if you had known what this means, 'I desire compassion, and not a sacrifice," you would not have condemned the innocent. (Matthew 12:7."  What are you focused on?
