Is This John the Baptist?

Matthew 14:1-12

Matthew now provides us with another person who refused to believe in Jesus.  Herod the Tetrarch believed Jesus to be the resurrected John the Baptist.  Herod was intrigued with John the Baptist but didn't believe John's message.  Our verses give us two reasons why Herod didn't accept John's message.  First, he wouldn't have killed John if he believed his message.  Second, he would have believed that Jesus was the Messiah.  King Herod was a wicked man whose only concern was himself.  At first, he didn't kill John because he was fearful of the crowds.  Finally he killed John because of his foolish promise;  Herod attempted to play games with Christ.  How might you be tempted to play games with Jesus?  Do you receive His word (the Bible) without qualification or fear of men?
