A Great Faith

Matthew 15:21-18

Have you encountered faith in an unexpected place?  It is the tendency of people to judge based on outward circumstances.  The perverted Gospel of prosperity preachers tell us that a strong faith makes you wealthy and healthy.  Think of ways you might be tempted to judge the faith of others by what you see.  The Pharisees were masters at judging based on the external.  The story before us must be understood in light of the Pharisees self-righteous religion.  First, Jesus left Israel and went to Tyre and Sidon.  Faith in this place would be unexpected at least to the Jews.  Second, a Canaanite woman approached Jesus asking for mercy.  This woman belonged to an ancient group of Israel's enemies and she was a woman.  These two markers were enough for the Jews to judge her as a lost cause.  The response of Jesus was not cruel but a moment to teach His followers that the Gospel was for all people. The persistent faith of the woman serves as a lesson for us today.

Thankful Thoughts:  Be thankful that no one is beyond the saving work of God.
