Pay Taxes

Matthew 17:24-27

I have heard people say there is more here than meets the eye, and it appears that this saying applies to these verses. What do you think the point of these verses is? Is this a lesson regarding paying civil taxes?  This is not a lesson on paying taxes to Rome and it is more than just paying a temple tax. Jesus is teaching us that the old Covenant is gone, and the New Covenant is here to stay. Jesus is teaching that He is the Son of God. He is not bound to pay the temple taxes. He is what the Old Testament was pointing to.  An additional lesson for us is found in verse 27.  Jesus and His disciples were under no obligation to pay the Temple tax. Jesus chose to comply for the sake of the Gospel. We cannot compromise concerning the Gospel and its demands, but we can do our best to live at peace with all people.

Thankful Thought: We can be thankful that the Gospel has delivered us from the penalty of sin by the work of Jesus Christ.  We are citizens of an eternal kingdom.
